Duties/ Responsibilities

An exciting opportunity exists for a passionate Senior Environmental Health Officer to join our Community Services and Facilitation directorate. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maximising public and environmental health outcomes within a community environment by identifying, preventing and remedying public and environmental health related hazards and risks.

Qualifications / Selection criteria

Essential
1. C Class Driver’s licence
2. Bachelor Degree of Environmental Health
3. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite of Applications
4. Minimum two (2) years relevant post graduate organisational experience
Desirable
1. Eligibility for membership/accreditation to Environmental Health Australia

Council is seeking an Environmental Health Officer to provide public health and environmental management services.

Duties/ Responsibilities

These services include assessing and monitoring compliance for all activities and premises within the public health and environmental management responsibilities of the Council and enforcing compliance with the requirements of relevant legislation, By-Laws and policies.

Qualifications / Selection criteria

Qualification must include:
• A recognised tertiary qualification and applicable accreditation in public and environmental health.
• Have a sound knowledge and understanding of the legislative framework within which Council operates and the capacity to quickly identify and respond to those requirements.

Duties/ Responsibilities

As an Environmental Health Officer, you will play a vital role in promoting public health and ensuring compliance with environmental health legislation. You'll conduct inspections, investigate complaints, and implement programs to protect and enhance community wellbeing.

Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting statutory inspections, investigating complaints, and initiating enforcement actions as required.
- Managing food safety programs, including sampling, compliance reporting, and community education initiatives.
- Investigating public health concerns, including nuisances, infectious diseases, and wastewater management.
- Supporting the development and review of Council's Health and Wellbeing and Emergency Management Plans.

Qualifications / Selection criteria

  • A Degree/Diploma in Applied Science, Environmental Health, or Public Health.
  • A Certificate of Competency from the Victorian Health Department.


While experience as an Environmental Health Officer in a regional local government is preferred, we also welcome candidates with relevant or similar experience. Knowledge in key areas such as food safety, public health and wellbeing, onsite wastewater management, tobacco control, aquatic facilities, and complaint investigation will set you up for success in this role.

With more than 50 Environmental Health Professionals across metro and rural councils plus a large immunisation team and support personnel, our staff have significant expertise and are respected leaders in the field. We have long standing relationships with a number of large and small councils in metro and rural Victoria and provide short-term contracting solutions to various other councils within Victoria.

This Leadership Role is responsible for the Environmental Health teams at Moyne, Ararat and Pyrenees Shires. This role would suit an experienced Environmental Health Leader interested in a tree change within some of Victoria’s most idyllic regional locations.

Duties/ Responsibilities

The role has operational responsibilities in respect of Moyne Shire and provides managerial oversight of the Ararat and Pyrenees teams (people management of 2 EHOs). The role is responsible for building culture and developing talent within the teams. Part of a network of professional and experienced Environmental Professionals, you will be part of Kernow’s Leadership team and work close with Kernow’s Executive Team.
In this role, your core responsibilities will be:

  • Working closely with Kernow’s Leadership team to manage the delivery of the Environmental Health Services at Moyne, Ararat and Pyrenees Shires.
  • Stakeholder relationships both within Councils and the broader Regional network.
  • In conjunction with Kernow’s Leadership team, set strategy and workplans for the teams.
  • Develop talent and culture within the teams, including responsibility for performance, development plans and annual performance reviews.
  • Help to drive technological innovations.
  • Operational responsibilities including Wastewater assessments and on-site inspections in respect of Moyne Shire.

Qualifications / Selection criteria

To be successful in this role, you will have recent experience as either a Team Leader, Environmental Health or an experienced Environmental Health Officer operating in a local government environment. Ideally you will have prior people leadership experience.

Supplementing this experience, you will possess a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Health) or other relevant tertiary qualification.


You will also have excellent communication and Leadership skills, a demonstrated ability to operate both autonomously and collaboratively within a team environment and manage stakeholders. You will be motivated to develop professionally and embrace new technology. You will also hold a valid Australian drivers’ licence.
